On Saturday 2 July 7pm, I’m running another DIY Chemical-Free Cleaning Workshop at Alchemy Cafe in Forth. As part of the workshop, we’re challenging all participants to go and investigate what exactly is in your cleaning products before the event. If you find that what you’re using contains toxic ingredients, bring them along to the workshop and chuck them in the TOXIC BIN. The person who chucks away the most toxic products will win a prize!
To make this task easier (of working out which ingredients are toxic), I highlighted ten of the more dangerous cleaning ingredients that you should keep an eye out for, in a post last week:
4. Formaldehyde
But there are thousands upon thousands more toxic chemicals that end up in our cleaning products. It would be pretty much impossible to remember them all. Fortunately there are some great resources which can help you navigate through the cesspool of chemicals. My favourite is The Chemical Maze: Bookshelf Companion, by Australian authors Bill Statham & Lindy Schneider. It’s only $25 or $30 from Amazon or Book Depository.
This is a really awesome book, and contains a comprehensive list of ingredients (and additives) found not only in cleaning products, but also in cosmetics and foods. Each ingredient has a smiley or a frowny face next to it, depending on whether it’s safe or harmful. The book also details the potential discomfort and ill health connected to the given ingredient, and also products it’s most commonly found in. It truly does make identifying ingredients in cleaning products so easy, and is a very helpful resource for anyone wanting to make real, healthy changes in their life.
You can also get a smaller ‘handbag’ size version that you can keep with you at all times to use when you’re shopping. They also do a Chemical Maze app for $10.99.
If you’d like to learn more about navigating your way through the chemical maze which has become our world, come along to the workshop next Saturday (2 July, 7pm at Alchemy Cafe) and get ready to be empowered!
The workshop is $25, which covers the cost of all the ingredients, containers and Young Living essential oils that you will use to make five cleaning products to take home to replace your old toxic ones. Spaces are limited, so we would appreciate if you can book in and pay prior to the night. You can purchase your spot for the workshop here 🙂
