Ok, so this is true…you see that delish-looking paleo brownie right there? Well you would NEVER guess that this brownie is actually made out of my DIY choc-mint lip balm. Weird, but true. And it’s also densely delicious!
At my last DIY Chemical-Free SKINCARE Workshop, there was quite a bit of the choc-mint lip balm mixture leftover (I must’ve got the measurements severely wrong, haha!). There was no way I was ever going to get through 140ml of lip balm (at least not in the five years or so, in which time it would well and truly have expired!), so me being the frugal mumma that I am, decided to melt the lip balm down and turn it into a completely edible brownie. How cool is that? How COOL is that that the DIY Skincare products you will learn to make at my workshops (next one is Sat 15 Oct, 6pm) are all completely safe to consume. Sure, some of the products probably won’t taste that fantastic if you eat them – but if you did chance to chug, say, the face wash that we make down your throat, it is not going to do any major harm.
I have a good rule of thumb regarding skincare products: if you couldn’t eat it, then you shouldn’t put it on your skin! Your skin is your largest organ and it is literally like a huge sponge-like mouth, that sucks up all the products that we put on it. In fact, at least 60% of what you put on your body goes INTO your body. That’s right, it gets absorbed by your skin, seeps into your blood stream, and gets tangled up amongst all your cells. If you’re putting toxic chemicals found in many commercially-made skincare products on your skin, those toxins are literally ending up in your cells, doing who knows what sort of damage.
Some scientists/manufacturers/people-who-make-lots-of-money-by-selling-convenient-cheap-and-not-so-cheap-toxic-products claim that so called ‘toxic’ chemicals, such as parabens (which are used as preservatives), are not dangerous. They claim that although parabens rapidly absorb through the skin, they are also fully excreted. However, a recent British Study at the University of Reading conducted by Dr. Philippa Darbe and colleagues on 20 different samples of human breast tumours showed that each sample of the tumours contained traces of the paraben chemicals. Dr Darbe concluded: “their detection in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to mimic the action of the female hormone estrogen.” If parabens are showing up in breast tumours, it’s pretty obvious that they aren’t being excreted. It is also highly probable, based on this study, that parabens may be one of the causes of breast cancer. It’s enough, anyway, to put me off ever using skincare products containing parabens and the like!
